Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has urged Nigerians to remain committed to the country’s development, saying citizens must work together to build a peaceful and prosperous nation.

Dogara made the appeal on Saturday during the 16th convocation ceremony of Achievers University, Owo, Ondo State, where he delivered an address titled, “Rethinking National Security for Sustainable Peace, Development and National Renewal”.

Speaking amid concerns over insecurity, economic hardship and youth unemployment, the former Speaker called on Nigerians not to lose faith in the country’s future.

He described Nigeria as a nation with a history of resilience, expressing optimism that the country could overcome its challenges through visionary leadership, strong institutions and responsible citizenship.

“The story of Nigeria is a story of resilience. It has endured storms and risen from them. It is still being written, and today it is being written with more hope than despair,” he said.

Dogara also emphasised the need for a country where children can learn without fear, farmers can work in peace, businesses can grow and communities can live together harmoniously.

He declared that building a secure and prosperous Nigeria should remain a shared responsibility, adding that every citizen has a role to play in national renewal.

Addressing the graduating students, Dogara, who is also the Chancellor of the university, urged them to apply the knowledge and skills acquired during their studies to solving national challenges.

Quoting former South African President Nelson Mandela, who described education as a powerful tool for changing the world, he told the graduates that their education should translate into meaningful contributions to society.

He encouraged lawyers to uphold justice, doctors to save lives, engineers to build essential infrastructure and entrepreneurs to create jobs and opportunities for others.

Dogara also challenged graduates entering public service to put national interest above personal ambitions, stressing the importance of patriotism and responsible leadership.
