CHIKE-OBI: LARGE FOREIGN RESERVES DON’T MEAN NIGERIANS ARE BETTER OFF
Financial expert Atedo Peterside Chike-Obi has cautioned that Nigeria’s growing foreign reserves should not automatically be interpreted as evidence that the country’s economy or citizens are better off.
He argued that foreign reserves alone do not provide a complete picture of economic wellbeing, as the benefits of stronger external balances must also be reflected in the living conditions of ordinary Nigerians.
Foreign reserves are funds held by a country’s central bank to support international payments, help manage exchange-rate pressures and strengthen confidence in the economy.
However, a country can accumulate substantial reserves while households and businesses continue to face challenges such as high living costs, rising prices and limited purchasing power.
Chike-Obi’s comments highlight the importance of assessing economic performance through broader indicators, including employment, inflation, income levels, business growth and the cost of living.
His position suggests that economic progress should be measured not only by the strength of national financial indicators but also by whether citizens experience tangible improvements in their daily lives.
