BOAT TRAGEDY INSPIRED SOUTHERN IJAW ROAD PROJECTS – DIRI
Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has revealed that a tragic boat accident inspired his administration’s determination to improve road infrastructure in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of the state.
Diri said the tragedy exposed the difficulties residents faced due to poor road connectivity and the heavy dependence on waterways for transportation.
According to the governor, the incident strengthened his resolve to end years of isolation in the oil-rich local government area by opening up communities through road construction.
He explained that his administration recognised the need to provide alternative transportation routes to reduce the risks associated with water travel and improve access to essential services.
The governor said the ongoing road projects were part of his government’s broader efforts to connect previously inaccessible communities, stimulate economic activities and improve the living conditions of residents.
Southern Ijaw, one of Bayelsa State’s largest local government areas, has several riverine communities where transportation has historically depended heavily on boats.
Diri maintained that improving road infrastructure would enhance the movement of people and goods, create economic opportunities and support development across the area.
He reiterated his administration’s commitment to addressing infrastructure challenges and ensuring that communities across Bayelsa benefit from development projects.
