Fresh disagreement has reportedly emerged within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections, as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, clash over the outcome and direction of the party’s presidential primary.
The disagreement comes amid growing political realignments and coalition talks aimed at challenging the ruling APC in the next presidential election.
Sources within the coalition revealed that tensions rose after comments credited to key stakeholders regarding who should emerge as the party’s consensus presidential candidate. While Atiku’s camp is said to be pushing for a transparent and competitive primary process, Babachir Lawal reportedly insisted that the coalition must prioritize unity and strategic calculations ahead of personal ambitions.
Political observers say the development may expose early cracks within the opposition alliance, especially as several heavyweight politicians continue consultations across party lines.
Despite the disagreement, insiders maintain that efforts are ongoing to prevent internal divisions from affecting the coalition’s broader objective of presenting a formidable challenge in 2027.
Neither Atiku Abubakar nor Babachir Lawal has officially released a detailed statement addressing the reported disagreement as of the time of filing this report.
