FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has criticised former Vice President Atiku Abubakar over his economic views, describing him as a “voodoo economist” and dismissing claims that he remains a leading presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 election.
Wike made the remarks while reacting to Atiku’s position on the removal of fuel subsidy and the economic policies of the Federal Government.
The minister defended the decision to remove the petrol subsidy, arguing that the policy was necessary to address the financial burden it placed on the country and redirect government resources towards other areas of development.
Wike questioned Atiku’s economic credentials and challenged the former vice president’s criticism of the government’s approach to the subsidy issue.
He also argued that political leaders seeking the presidency must present Nigerians with practical solutions rather than criticise government policies without offering workable alternatives.
The FCT minister further downplayed Atiku’s political strength ahead of the 2027 presidential election, saying he should not be regarded as an automatic or leading contender for the presidency.
Wike’s comments come amid increasing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, with Atiku and other opposition figures consulting on possible alliances to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the ruling APC.
The debate over fuel subsidy removal remains one of the major issues shaping discussions around Nigeria’s economy, with supporters of the policy arguing that it has reduced the government’s financial burden while critics say it has increased the cost of living.
The exchange between Wike and Atiku is expected to add to the growing political debate as parties and presidential aspirants position themselves ahead of 2027.
