Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has dismissed the emergence of former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi as the running mate to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for the 2027 presidential election, saying the choice does not offer any significant electoral advantage.
Wike argued that Amaechi’s political record and influence are not enough to strengthen the opposition ticket, insisting that his selection would not substantially alter the political landscape ahead of the 2027 polls.
According to the FCT minister, elections are won through the confidence and support of the electorate rather than the reputation of individual politicians.
He also criticised what he described as attempts to portray the vice-presidential nomination as a game-changing development, maintaining that Nigerians would ultimately assess candidates based on their performance, leadership qualities, and vision for the country.
Wike reaffirmed his support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, expressing confidence that the ruling party remains well-positioned ahead of the next general election.
He urged political actors to focus on issue-based campaigns and avoid unnecessary political distractions, stressing that governance and national development should remain the priority.
The minister added that the 2027 elections would be decided by the Nigerian people through the ballot box, expressing confidence that voters would make their choices based on competence and credibility.
