Former Cross River State Governor Donald Duke has criticised the Federal Government’s fuel policy under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, arguing that the policy has increased government revenue while placing greater economic pressure on ordinary Nigerians.
Duke questioned the benefits of the policy for citizens, particularly amid the rising cost of transportation, food and other essential goods.
He argued that while the government may be generating more revenue following the removal of fuel subsidies, many Nigerians are struggling with the higher cost of living.
The former governor said economic policies should not be judged solely by increased government revenue or other macroeconomic indicators, but by their impact on the daily lives of citizens.
Duke maintained that the government must do more to ensure that the benefits of economic reforms are felt by ordinary Nigerians.
He also called for policies that would reduce the financial burden on households and create an environment where businesses can thrive and provide more employment opportunities.
The comments come amid continued debate over the impact of fuel subsidy removal and other economic reforms introduced by the Tinubu administration.
While the Federal Government has defended the reforms as necessary to stabilise the economy and reduce the cost of subsidy payments, critics have continued to argue that Nigerians are bearing the immediate burden of the policies.
Duke urged the government to focus on measures that would improve living standards and ensure that economic growth translates into tangible benefits for the population.
