GOVERNORS, NOT TINUBU, SHOULD ACCOUNT FOR SUBSIDY GAINS — ABIODUN

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has said state governors, rather than President Bola Tinubu, should account for how the financial gains from the removal of petrol subsidy are being spent.
Abiodun said the subsidy removal has increased funds available to the states through higher allocations, making governors responsible for explaining how the additional resources are being utilised.
The governor made the remarks while addressing concerns over the impact of subsidy removal and the distribution and use of increased government revenues.
He said state governments should be prepared to demonstrate how the additional funds received since the subsidy removal have been applied to projects and programmes that benefit citizens.
The comments come amid continued debate over the economic impact of the subsidy removal and how governments at different levels are using the resulting increase in public revenue.
Abiodun’s position places greater responsibility on state governments to account for the use of additional revenues accruing to them following the subsidy reform.
