ATIKU’S SUBSIDY PROPOSAL WILL REVERSE ECONOMIC GAINS — APC CHAIR

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje, has warned that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s proposal to reverse the removal of the petrol subsidy could undermine the economic gains recorded by the Federal Government.
Ganduje argued that returning to the subsidy regime would place additional pressure on government finances and potentially reverse some of the reforms introduced under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Atiku, the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has proposed reversing the subsidy policy, arguing that the current approach has increased hardship for Nigerians and contributed to rising living costs.
However, the APC chairman defended the Tinubu administration’s decision, saying the government’s reforms are aimed at restructuring the economy and reducing financial pressures caused by subsidy payments.
He warned that returning to the previous system could recreate the challenges associated with fuel subsidy payments and place a heavier burden on public finances.
Ganduje urged Nigerians to consider the long-term implications of the competing economic proposals ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
The debate over fuel subsidy has become one of the major issues expected to shape the 2027 election, with opposition figures calling for policy changes while the APC continues to defend the reforms.
