OKONJO-IWEALA HAILS AFRICAN TEAMS’ IMPRESSIVE WORLD CUP CAMPAIGN

Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has praised the outstanding performances of African teams at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, describing their campaign as a proud moment for the continent.
Okonjo-Iweala commended the resilience, determination, and quality displayed by African representatives throughout the tournament, noting that their achievements have inspired millions of football fans across Africa and beyond.
She singled out teams such as Morocco, Egypt, and Cape Verde for their impressive performances, saying they demonstrated that African football continues to make significant progress on the global stage.
According to her, the success of the teams reflects years of investment in football development, improved coaching, and the emergence of talented players competing at the highest level.
The WTO chief expressed hope that the achievements recorded at the tournament would encourage greater investment in sports infrastructure and youth development across the continent.
She also congratulated the players, coaches, and football federations for representing Africa with pride, courage, and determination against some of the world’s strongest teams.
Okonjo-Iweala said the performances have strengthened Africa’s reputation in international football and provided inspiration for future generations of young athletes.
