A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Kabiru Turaki has reportedly granted former President Goodluck Jonathan a waiver and cleared him to contest as a presidential aspirant ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to reports, the waiver was approved to enable Jonathan fully participate in the partyโ€™s presidential process despite internal party regulations and political considerations.
The Turaki-led faction described the former president as a credible national figure with the experience and leadership qualities needed to lead the country again.
Political observers say the development could significantly reshape conversations surrounding the 2027 presidential race and ongoing political realignments within the opposition.
Jonathanโ€™s possible return to active presidential politics has continued to generate widespread debate across Nigeria, with supporters and critics expressing differing opinions.
Analysts believe the move may further deepen internal divisions within the PDP as different factions and aspirants continue consultations and strategic positioning ahead of the elections.
Supporters of the former president welcomed the clearance, arguing that Jonathanโ€™s previous leadership experience and national appeal make him a strong contender.
However, some party stakeholders insist that broader consultations and party unity would be necessary before any consensus could emerge within the PDP.
The PDP has continued to witness internal negotiations, alliances and factional activities as opposition figures position themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.
