Pressure is mounting on senior police authorities following growing allegations that Nigeriaโ€™s cybercrime law is being misused to silence critics, journalists, and social media users.

Civil society organisations and media rights groups have called on the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force to address what they describe as the increasing abuse of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act.

The calls are directed particularly at senior police officials, including Olatunji Disu, urging authorities to ensure that the law is not used to intimidate citizens or suppress freedom of expression.

Rights advocates argue that several individuals have reportedly been arrested or questioned under provisions of the Cybercrime Act for online posts, comments, or digital publications that authorities deemed offensive.

According to the groups, while the law was originally enacted to combat online fraud, identity theft, and cyber-related crimes, its provisions have increasingly been invoked in cases involving criticism of public officials.

Legal experts say this trend risks undermining democratic freedoms, particularly freedom of speech and press freedom.

They are therefore calling for clearer guidelines on how the Cybercrime Act should be enforced, as well as stronger oversight mechanisms to prevent misuse.

Some advocacy organisations have also urged the National Assembly to review certain provisions of the law to ensure they align with constitutional protections for free expression.

Meanwhile, police authorities have maintained that the Cybercrime Act remains an important tool in combating digital crime and protecting citizens from online fraud and harassment.

Observers say how the police leadership responds to the growing concerns could shape public trust in the enforcement of cybercrime laws in Nigeria.
