The National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Sly Ezeokenwa, has said politics should not be treated as a full-time career, stressing that professionals should participate in governance to strengthen accountability and improve leadership in Nigeria.

Ezeokenwa made the remark while speaking on the need for greater participation of professionals in politics and public administration.

According to him, politics should be seen as a platform for service rather than a permanent occupation for individuals seeking personal gain. He argued that when politics becomes a lifelong career, it often leads to poor governance, abuse of power, and a disconnect between leaders and the realities faced by ordinary citizens.

The APGA chairman noted that individuals with professional backgrounds in sectors such as business, education, law, engineering, and medicine bring valuable expertise that can help improve policy formulation and governance.

He said encouraging such professionals to participate in politics would lead to more responsible leadership and ensure that government policies reflect practical solutions to the country’s challenges.

Ezeokenwa also urged political office holders to remember that leadership is about service to the people rather than personal enrichment.

According to him, Nigeria’s political system would become stronger if citizens who have built successful careers outside politics enter public office with the intention of contributing their knowledge and experience.

He added that politics should not replace professional careers but should instead serve as an opportunity for individuals to contribute to national development.

Ezeokenwa emphasized that a system where politicians depend solely on politics for survival can create incentives for corruption and poor governance.

He therefore called for reforms that would encourage transparency, accountability, and the inclusion of competent professionals in leadership positions.

The APGA leader reaffirmed his party’s commitment to promoting good governance and responsible leadership across the country.
