The Plateau State Government has inaugurated an independent investigative panel to examine allegations of misconduct against officials of the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) across the state.
The move follows growing public complaints accusing some VIO personnel of harassment, excessive fines, intimidation of motorists, and what authorities described as “overzealous enforcement” of traffic regulations. According to the government, the committee was established to restore public confidence and ensure accountability within the agency.
Officials said the panel is made up of legal experts, civil society representatives, and transport stakeholders who will review petitions, gather evidence from affected residents, and recommend appropriate sanctions where wrongdoing is established. The committee is also expected to propose reforms aimed at improving professionalism and transparency in traffic enforcement operations.
Speaking during the inauguration, state authorities stressed that the government remains committed to protecting citizens from abuse while maintaining road safety standards. They urged members of the public to submit documented complaints and cooperate with the investigation.
The panel has been given a specific timeline to complete its assignment and submit findings, which will guide further administrative or disciplinary actions against any erring officers.
Observers say the probe reflects increasing pressure on state institutions to address allegations of misconduct by enforcement agencies and strengthen public trust in governance structures.
