The internal crisis rocking the Labour Party has intensified as the faction led by Nenadi Usman called for the arrest of the partyโs National Chairman, Julius Abure, over an alleged invasion of the partyโs national secretariat.
In a statement issued by members of the Usman-led caretaker group, the faction accused Abure and his supporters of forcefully entering the secretariat and disrupting party activities. They alleged that the incident undermined ongoing efforts to stabilise the party and restore unity among members.
According to the faction, security agencies should investigate the circumstances surrounding the alleged invasion and ensure that individuals responsible are held accountable. The group insisted that adherence to due process and respect for party structures were essential to resolving the lingering leadership dispute.
However, Abureโs camp rejected the allegations, describing the claims as politically motivated and aimed at discrediting the partyโs recognised leadership. Supporters of the national chairman maintained that he remained in charge of the partyโs affairs and had every right to access the secretariat.
Sources within the party disclosed that tensions escalated after rival groups attempted to assert control over administrative operations, deepening the rift that has plagued the Labour Party since the aftermath of recent internal disagreements.
Political observers warn that the continued crisis could weaken the partyโs preparations ahead of future elections if a lasting resolution is not reached. Some stakeholders have called for reconciliation talks involving senior party leaders and independent mediators to prevent further escalation.
As of press time, the Nigeria Police Force had not issued an official statement regarding any arrest request or investigation linked to the incident. Efforts to obtain reactions from both factions were ongoing, while party members and supporters continued to express concern over the growing divisions within the Labour Party.
