Terrorists’ Warning Letters Spark Mass Exodus In Kwara Communities
Fear has gripped several communities in Kwara State following the circulation of threat letters by suspected terrorists, forcing residents to flee their homes amid rising security concerns.
Reports indicate that within the past six days, warning messages were delivered to at least four communities, including Ira, Inaja and Aho in Oyun Local Government Area, as well as Dunshigogo in Kaiama LGA. The letters allegedly warned of imminent attacks, coming shortly after the deadly February 3 assault on Woro town that left more than 170 people dead and dozens abducted.
Sources revealed that one of the letters was dropped at a motorcycle park near the central mosque in Ira by two unidentified men on a bike. After reading the content, residents quickly alerted local traditional authorities, triggering widespread panic.
Many villagers have since begun relocating to safer areas, fearing that the threats could materialise at any time. A traditional chief, who spoke anonymously for security reasons, confirmed that families were already abandoning their homes, while local leaders intensified community surveillance.
The letter, reportedly signed by a group identified as “The Writer (SANUFH),” contained threatening language claiming responsibility for killings, kidnappings and destruction. However, authorities have yet to verify the authenticity of the message.
Security concerns remain heightened due to the affected communities’ proximity to forest corridors often exploited by criminal groups. Residents are urging government and security agencies to deploy more personnel to prevent further attacks and reassure displaced villagers.
