Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has reaffirmed his administrationโs commitment to ending gender-based violence, promising strong political leadership, increased funding, and executive backing for policies aimed at protecting women and vulnerable groups across the state.
Makinde made the pledge during an engagement with stakeholders working on gender protection and social justice initiatives, where he emphasised the need for collective action between government agencies, civil society organisations and community leaders.
The governor said tackling gender-based violence requires not only legal frameworks but also sustained awareness, improved reporting systems and support services for survivors. According to him, the state government is ready to strengthen existing structures to ensure victims receive justice and rehabilitation.
He noted that gender-based violence remains a serious societal challenge that undermines development and social stability. Makinde stressed that his administration would continue to prioritise policies that promote equality, safety and respect for human rights.
โAs a government, we are committed to providing the necessary executive backing and budgetary support to ensure laws against gender-based violence are effectively implemented,โ he said.
Stakeholders at the meeting called for stronger enforcement of existing laws, expansion of shelters for victims and improved collaboration with security agencies. They also urged communities to speak out against abuse and support survivors.
Makinde assured participants that the state would continue to partner with local and international organisations to expand prevention programmes and strengthen response mechanisms.
The renewed commitment comes amid growing calls nationwide for stricter measures against domestic abuse, sexual violence and other forms of gender-related crimes, with advocates pushing for increased accountability and sustained public awareness campaigns.
