Adeleke Asks Egbetokun to Reopen Amotekun Offices in Osun to Prevent Bandit Attacks
Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has appealed to the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to immediately unseal the offices of the Osun State Security Network Agency, also known as Amotekun, to allow the outfit resume operations across the state.
The governor made the call amid growing security concerns, particularly the rising incidents of banditry and kidnapping in neighbouring states.
In a statement issued on Friday by his Chief Press Secretary, Olawale Rasheed, Adeleke said the continued closure of Amotekun offices had significantly weakened Osun’s security architecture, leaving rural communities and border towns vulnerable to criminal attacks.
According to the governor, Osun shares boundaries with Kwara State, where recent bandit activities have heightened fears of possible spillover into the state if proactive security measures are not taken.
“The shutdown of Amotekun operations has created security gaps that expose our people, especially those in rural and border areas, to avoidable dangers,” Adeleke said.
He stressed that Amotekun plays a complementary role to conventional security agencies, particularly in intelligence gathering, community policing, and rapid response in hard-to-reach areas.
Governor Adeleke urged the police authorities to reconsider their position in the interest of public safety, noting that the Osun State Government remains committed to working collaboratively with federal security agencies to maintain peace and order.
He also reassured residents that his administration would continue to prioritise security and take all lawful steps necessary to protect lives and property across the state.
As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official response from the Nigeria Police Force headquarters on the governor’s appeal.
