UNICEF Empowers 100,000 Youths With Digital, Vocational Skills in Borno
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has empowered no fewer than 100,000 young people in Borno State with digital and vocational skills as part of efforts to promote youth self-reliance and economic inclusion.
The intervention, according to UNICEF, is aimed at supporting the transition of young people from learning to earning, particularly in conflict-affected communities across the state.
Speaking during the programme, UNICEF officials said the initiative focuses on equipping youths with relevant skills needed to thrive in today’s digital economy, while also providing vocational training in areas such as tailoring, carpentry, welding, ICT, agribusiness and other market-driven trades.
The organisation noted that the programme was designed to address the challenges of unemployment, poverty and social exclusion among young people, especially those affected by insurgency and displacement in the North-East.
UNICEF explained that beyond skills acquisition, beneficiaries were also supported with mentorship, life skills training and access to basic tools to enable them to start small businesses or secure employment after completing the programme.
According to the agency, the empowerment drive aligns with its broader mandate of protecting children and youths while fostering sustainable development through education, innovation and economic opportunities.
Officials of the Borno State Government commended UNICEF for the initiative, describing it as a timely intervention that complements the state’s efforts to rebuild livelihoods and restore hope among young people affected by years of insecurity.
Some beneficiaries of the programme expressed gratitude to UNICEF, noting that the skills acquired had improved their confidence and provided them with opportunities to generate income and contribute meaningfully to their communities.
UNICEF reaffirmed its commitment to working with the Borno State Government and other partners to expand youth-focused programmes aimed at strengthening resilience, reducing dependency and promoting long-term stability in the region.
