Peter Obi, former governor of Anambra State and the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, has questioned the whereabouts of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, amid what he described as worsening economic hardship, rising insecurity and an apparent vacuum in national leadership.

Obi raised the concern in a statement shared on Sunday, where he lamented the growing difficulties faced by Nigerians, including the high cost of living, persistent fuel and food price hikes, unemployment and increasing incidents of violent crime across the country.

According to him, at a time when Nigerians are grappling with unprecedented hardship, citizens expect to see visible leadership, clear direction and regular engagement from the president. He questioned why the president has remained largely out of public view while the nation faces multiple crises.

“With the level of suffering, insecurity and uncertainty in the country today, Nigerians are asking a simple question: where is our president?” Obi said.

The former governor noted that leadership is not only about issuing statements or delegating responsibilities but also about being present, listening to the people and offering reassurance during difficult times. He argued that silence or prolonged absence from the public space sends the wrong signal to citizens already battling despair.

Obi further stressed that Nigeria’s challenges require urgent and hands-on leadership, particularly in addressing inflation, hunger and insecurity. He urged the federal government to prioritize transparency and communication, adding that citizens deserve to know how their leaders are responding to the country’s mounting problems.

The Labour Party chieftain also called on those in government to place the welfare of Nigerians above politics, insisting that governance should be about service, empathy and accountability.

As of the time of filing this report, the Presidency had not issued an official response to Obi’s remarks.

The comments have since sparked reactions across social media, with supporters and critics alike debating the president’s visibility and the broader question of leadership accountability in Nigeria.
