Former United States President Donald Trump has warned that the United States could carry out further military strikes in Nigeria if attacks on Christians persist.

Trump made the statement during an interview with The New York Times (NYT) while responding to questions on whether the Christmas Day missile strikes against terrorist targets in Nigeria marked the beginning of a broader U.S. military campaign in the country.

According to Trump, the United States would not hesitate to intensify military action if reports of continued violence against Christian communities remain unresolved.

“If the attacks continue, there will be more strikes. We will not stand by while Christians are being killed,” Trump reportedly told the newspaper.

The Christmas Day strikes targeted positions linked to the Islamic State terror group and came weeks after Trump publicly threatened to deploy U.S. forces into Nigeria, vowing to go in “guns-a-blazing” to wipe out terrorists allegedly targeting Christians.

The remarks followed repeated claims by some U.S. politicians and advocacy groups that Christians in Nigeria are facing systematic persecution and what they described as genocide, a claim the Nigerian government has consistently denied.

Nigerian authorities have maintained that the country’s security challenges are driven by terrorism, banditry, and criminal violence affecting people of all religions, rather than a targeted religious campaign.

Security analysts warn that Trump’s comments could heighten diplomatic tensions between Abuja and Washington, while also raising concerns about sovereignty and the implications of foreign military action on Nigerian soil.

The Federal Government has yet to officially respond to the latest warning.
