The Kwara State Government has declared waterway safety โ€œnon-negotiableโ€ as it begins strict enforcement of its โ€œno life jacket, no entryโ€ policy, distributing 2,500 life jackets across five riverine LGAs.

Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, represented by the Commissioner for Special Duties, John Bello, supervised the distribution at the Ipata-Jebba Waterfront in Moro LGA. A statement from the Ministry of Transportation said the initiative aims to protect citizens whose livelihoods depend heavily on water transport.

AbdulRazaq noted that Kwaraโ€™s rivers hold vast economic opportunities for fishing, trade and commerce, stressing that the jackets must be properly used to reduce recurring mishaps. He added that the state remains committed to building a safe and sustainable environment for growth.

Commissioner for Transportation, Aliyu Sabi, described the distribution as a lifeline for riverine communities, recalling recent fatal boat capsizes, especially in Patigi. He thanked President Bola Tinubu for supporting the state and assured that allocation would be transparent.

Chairman of the House Committee on Transport, Lawal Saliu, said the legislature would continue to strengthen safety regulations to ensure government interventions reach the right people.

Representing the Moro LGA Chairman, Council Secretary Nura Muhammed praised the gesture as timely, saying it would boost economic activities for fishermen and farmers in Jebba and nearby areas.

Speaking for the beneficiaries, youth leader Azeez Arisekola thanked the governor for earlier interventionsโ€”including the donation of fibre speedboatsโ€”which he said had already reduced accidents. He urged the state to partner with HYPPADEC to build concrete embankments around the Jebba water region to curb flooding.
