Former Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Osita Chidoka, has warned that Nigeria may record up to 65,000 road-crash deaths by 2030 if the government fails to urgently invest in road safety infrastructure and enforcement.
Chidoka issued the warning while speaking on the country’s rising rate of road accidents, noting that Nigeria currently records thousands of preventable deaths every year. He stressed that the trend will worsen unless strategic action is taken to improve road conditions and strengthen safety systems.
According to him, poor enforcement capacity, inadequate patrol vehicles, bad roads and weak compliance with traffic laws continue to put road users at risk. He called on the Federal Government to prioritise funding for FRSC operations, particularly on high-risk corridors across the country.
The former minister urged authorities to adopt a “Vision Zero” approach, targeting a significant reduction in deaths through better planning, modernised traffic management and sustained public awareness campaigns. He added that no new laws are needed — only the effective implementation of existing safety regulations.
Chidoka emphasised that with proper investment, political will and coordinated action, Nigeria can drastically cut fatalities and prevent what he described as a looming national tragedy.
