The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern states and Abuja has urged citizens to see former U.S. President Donald Trumpโ€™s recent comments on alleged Christian genocide in Nigeria as a call for unity and peace, not division.

Rev. John Hayab, chairman of the Northern CAN, told the News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday that Trumpโ€™s statement should motivate both Christians and Muslims to work together in demanding government action against killings and intolerance.

โ€œTrumpโ€™s statement about Christian genocide in Nigeria should be an opportunity for peace-loving Christians and Muslims to unite and demand concrete action by our government to stop the killing of anybody because of religion or any form of identity,โ€ Hayab said.

He added that a fair interpretation of Trumpโ€™s remarks shows concern for Nigeriaโ€™s stability rather than condemnation. โ€œIf you choose to read President Trumpโ€™s statement with an open mind, you will hear the voice of a visitor who cares about you and wants you to do something serious to enjoy peace and unity in your country,โ€ he noted.

Hayab warned against individuals trying to twist the comments to cause disunity. He reiterated that Nigerians desire a nation where everyone can practice their faith freely without fear or discrimination, urging both religious leaders and the government to focus on peacebuilding and national reconciliation.
