The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern states and Abuja has urged citizens to see former U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent comments on alleged Christian genocide in Nigeria as a call for unity and peace, not division.
Rev. John Hayab, chairman of the Northern CAN, told the News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday that Trump’s statement should motivate both Christians and Muslims to work together in demanding government action against killings and intolerance.
“Trump’s statement about Christian genocide in Nigeria should be an opportunity for peace-loving Christians and Muslims to unite and demand concrete action by our government to stop the killing of anybody because of religion or any form of identity,” Hayab said.
He added that a fair interpretation of Trump’s remarks shows concern for Nigeria’s stability rather than condemnation. “If you choose to read President Trump’s statement with an open mind, you will hear the voice of a visitor who cares about you and wants you to do something serious to enjoy peace and unity in your country,” he noted.
Hayab warned against individuals trying to twist the comments to cause disunity. He reiterated that Nigerians desire a nation where everyone can practice their faith freely without fear or discrimination, urging both religious leaders and the government to focus on peacebuilding and national reconciliation.
