Donald Trump has dismissed Elon Musk’s plan to launch a new political movement called the “America Party” as “ridiculous,” but analysts say it could become a serious threat to Republicans, who currently hold only slim majorities in Congress.

Musk announced the party over the weekend, after criticizing Trump’s newly signed domestic policy bill for potentially increasing the federal deficit. Though Musk has not shared detailed policies yet, he is expected to target House and Senate seats in the 2026 midterm elections—particularly those held by Republicans who supported the bill despite past calls for fiscal discipline.

Political analyst and former Republican candidate Matt Shoemaker noted that Musk’s move could “upend the midterms,” warning that Republicans should be concerned.

Musk, currently the world’s richest person, had hinted at starting the party for weeks. A recent social media poll he conducted showed 80% support among 5.6 million respondents.
