2026 World Cup Qualifier: Alex Iwobi Reveals Tactics That Stopped Nigeria From Beating Zimbabawe

Super Eagles midfielder, Alex Iwobi, has revealed why the team was not able to beat Zimbabwe in their World Cup qualifier on Sunday.

Iwobi blamed their opponents tactics and approach to the game as the reason the Eagles could not fly.

The Super Eagles had to come from behind to record a 1-1 draw with Zimbabwe.

This is the second draw from the team’s two 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches.

The 1-1 was a follow up to the same result recorded against Lesotho in their first game of the qualification series in Uyo on Thursday.

Walter Musona gave the hosts the lead in the 26th minute, firing in a free kick from outside the box.

Substitute Iheanacho equalised for the Super Eagles 25 minutes from time.

Iwobi said the team must keep fighting to ensure they qualify for the USA & Mexico 2026.

We’re disappointed with the players we have, Nigeria is a country with a lot of quality players, we should have been able to get more points and goals,” the 27-year-old said during the post-match press conference.

“We won’t dwell on this, we’ll keep fighting till the very end to make sure we qualify.

“Of course they had the tactics to try and waste time to disrupt our tempo of the game so it favored them.”

Nigeria will host South Africa in their next game in June 2023.
