Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has expressed the disappointment of many Nigerians over the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Wike made the remark while interacting with former Super Eagles captain, Joseph Yobo, noting that football remains a unifying force in the country and that Nigerians had hoped to see their national team compete on football’s biggest stage.
According to the minister, the absence of the Super Eagles from the tournament has left many football fans frustrated, given the country’s rich football history and the immense talent available within the national team.
He stressed the need for stakeholders in Nigerian football to reflect on the factors that led to the disappointing outcome and work towards rebuilding the team for future competitions.
Wike also praised former internationals such as Yobo for their contributions to Nigerian football and their role in inspiring younger generations of players.
The minister expressed optimism that the Super Eagles can bounce back stronger, urging football administrators, coaches, players, and supporters to remain committed to restoring Nigeria’s status as a football powerhouse.
