Vice President Kashim Shettima has revealed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu deliberately kept his decision to remove fuel subsidy a closely guarded secret to avoid pressure and persuasion against the move.
According to Shettima, the subsidy removal plan was intentionally excluded from Tinubu’s written inaugural speech to prevent attempts to discourage or delay the decision.
The Vice President explained that the administration believed the policy was necessary to address long-standing economic challenges and reduce the financial burden of subsidy payments on the country.
He noted that keeping the decision confidential before the announcement helped prevent resistance from powerful interests that benefited from the subsidy regime.
The removal of fuel subsidy, announced during Tinubu’s inauguration speech in 2023, triggered major economic and political reactions across Nigeria due to its impact on fuel prices and cost of living.
Supporters of the policy argue that subsidy removal was necessary for economic reforms, increased government revenue and long-term fiscal stability.
Critics, however, continue to blame the policy for worsening inflation, transportation costs and economic hardship faced by many Nigerians.
Political analysts say Shettima’s remarks provide fresh insight into internal decisions surrounding one of the most controversial economic policies introduced by the current administration.
The debate over fuel subsidy removal remains one of the defining issues of Tinubu’s presidency and Nigeria’s ongoing economic reform agenda.
