The Federal Government has approved the recruitment of over 94,000 new security personnel, including 50,000 police constables, in a sweeping plan aimed at strengthening national security and boosting manpower across key agencies.
According to officials, the recruitment drive will cut across the Police, Civil Defence, Immigration, Correctional Service and other paramilitary bodies. The move forms part of the administration’s efforts to curb rising insecurity and ensure faster emergency response nationwide.
Government sources explained that the new personnel will be deployed to critical areas affected by banditry, kidnapping, communal conflicts and other security challenges. The initiative is also expected to address the shortage of operational staff within several agencies whose workforce has declined over the years due to retirements and rising demands.
The Ministry of Interior noted that the mass enlistment will be implemented in phases to ensure proper screening, training and deployment. It added that recruitment guidelines will be published to ensure transparency, while priority will be given to qualified young Nigerians across all states.
Officials emphasised that the new intakes will undergo enhanced training focused on intelligence gathering, modern crime-fighting skills, counter-terrorism techniques and community policing.
