Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has hailed Chief Olabode George as a key figure in his rise to political prominence, describing the PDP chieftain as a major pillar in his journey and growth in Nigerian politics.

Makinde, in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media, Dr. Sulaimon Olanrewaju, made the remarks on Friday during the 80th birthday celebration of Chief George in Lagos. He recounted how George supported him during a critical moment in 2014 when he sought to declare his governorship ambition on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party.

According to the governor, vested interests within the party mounted pressure to frustrate his public declaration at the Polo Ground in Ibadan by ensuring the withdrawal of a military approval for the venue. He explained that despite preparations and invitations already made, the approval was revoked following internal opposition.

Makinde said he immediately sought the intervention of Chief George, who stepped in, summoned stakeholders, and ensured the approval was restored on the eve of the event. He noted that the successful declaration marked the beginning of his political journey that eventually led him to becoming governor.

Praising George for his resilience and contributions to national development, Makinde described the octogenarian as a strong and unwavering personality shaped by his military background. He added that George had endured many challenges but continued to stand tall.

Makinde further used the occasion to congratulate George on his 80th birthday, urging Nigerians to draw inspiration from his life story, which he described as one marked by trials, triumphs, and purposeful leadership. He stressed that challenges are part of life’s journey, but God ensures safe arrival at one’s destination.

The event was attended by prominent political leaders, including Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed, as well as leading traditional rulers and dignitaries.
