Political calculations ahead of the 2027 general election are gathering pace, with indications that the South-East could become a major battleground as leaders across the region reposition for the next electoral cycle.
According to reports, three South-East governors are expected to seek re-election in 2027, while another governor, whose tenure ends next year, is believed to be working to install a preferred successor who would sustain his political influence.
Although the governors currently belong to different political parties, observers say ongoing consultations and strategic alliances suggest that political interests may transcend party lines as the elections approach.
The reported realignments have also fueled speculation about President Bola Tinubu’s plans to expand the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s influence in the South-East, a region where the party has historically faced strong opposition.
Political analysts believe the coming months will witness increased negotiations, coalition-building, and defections as parties intensify preparations for the 2027 polls.
With governorship and presidential elections on the horizon, the South-East is expected to play a crucial role in shaping Nigeria’s political landscape.
