SERAP TO AKPABIO, ABBAS: REFUND ₦110BN SPENT ON LUXURY CARS, ALLOWANCES
The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, to ensure the refund of an alleged ₦110 billion spent on luxury vehicles and what it described as unlawful allowances for members of the National Assembly.
In a statement, the civic organisation argued that public funds should be prioritised for critical sectors such as education, healthcare, security, and infrastructure, especially amid the country’s economic challenges.
SERAP maintained that government officials and lawmakers must be accountable for the use of public resources and ensure that all expenditures comply with constitutional and legal provisions.
The organisation also urged relevant anti-corruption and oversight agencies to investigate the expenditure and provide Nigerians with full details of how the funds were allocated and utilised.
According to SERAP, transparency and accountability are essential to strengthening public trust in democratic institutions and promoting responsible governance.
The demand is expected to fuel fresh debate over public spending, legislative welfare packages, and the management of government resources at a time many Nigerians are grappling with economic hardship.
