The Federal Government has disclosed that Nigeria’s National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) database played a key role in the arrest of seven suspected Boko Haram and ISWAP commanders who were returning to the country from the Hajj pilgrimage.
Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, said the suspects were identified through the integration of Nigeria’s digital identity database with immigration and border management systems.
According to the minister, the successful operation demonstrates the growing effectiveness of technology-driven security measures in detecting and intercepting individuals linked to criminal and terrorist activities.
He noted that the integration of the NIMC database has significantly strengthened intelligence gathering, identity verification, and border security, making it more difficult for wanted suspects to evade detection.
Tunji-Ojo added that the government remains committed to leveraging digital technology to enhance national security, combat terrorism, and improve public safety across the country.
He assured Nigerians that security agencies will continue to work together to identify and apprehend individuals who pose threats to national peace and stability.
The minister described the arrests as a major success in the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen security through innovation and inter-agency collaboration.
