The Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) has warned that growing voter apathy and the influence of money in elections pose serious threats to Nigeria’s democratic development.
According to the institute, low voter participation weakens accountability and reduces citizens’ ability to influence governance through the ballot box.
IPCR also expressed concern over the increasing role of money politics, noting that vote-buying and excessive campaign spending undermine the credibility of elections and weaken public trust in democratic institutions.
The organisation stressed that democracy can only thrive when citizens actively participate in the electoral process and make informed choices based on competence, integrity, and policies rather than financial inducements.
It called on political parties, civil society groups, electoral bodies, and government institutions to intensify voter education and promote transparent electoral practices.
The warning comes amid growing concerns about declining voter turnout in recent elections and renewed calls for reforms to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic system.
