INEC TO BOOST PWD PARTICIPATION IN 2027 ELECTIONS

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced engagements with disability groups as part of efforts to increase the participation of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in the 2027 general elections.

The initiative is aimed at addressing barriers that may prevent PWDs from participating fully in the electoral process, including voter registration, access to polling units and voting on Election Day.

INEC has previously identified the need to make electoral facilities more accessible and to strengthen the participation of PWDs as voters, candidates, political party officials and other stakeholders.

The Commission’s framework on access and participation of PWDs also provides for collaboration with relevant disability organisations to identify challenges and develop practical solutions that can improve inclusion.

INEC is expected to continue consultations with disability groups and other stakeholders ahead of the 2027 elections, with the aim of ensuring that eligible voters with disabilities can participate more easily in the electoral process.

The 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled for February 20, 2027, while the governorship and State House of Assembly elections are scheduled for March 6, 2027.
