The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has disclosed that the Dangote Refinery imported approximately 1.46 billion litres of gasoline blendstock between January and May 2026 to support its petrol production operations.
According to the regulator, the imports were part of the refinery’s efforts to ensure a steady supply of refined petroleum products while ramping up production capacity.
Gasoline blendstock is a key component used in the production of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, and is often blended with other materials to meet required fuel specifications.
The revelation comes amid ongoing discussions about Nigeria’s fuel supply chain and the role of the Dangote Refinery in reducing the country’s dependence on imported refined petroleum products.
Industry observers say the refinery’s operations are expected to significantly boost domestic fuel production, enhance energy security, and reduce pressure on foreign exchange used for fuel imports.
The NMDPRA maintained that the importation complied with existing regulations and forms part of normal refining operations aimed at meeting market demand.
The Dangote Refinery, Africa’s largest single-train refinery, continues to play a major role in the transformation of Nigeria’s downstream petroleum sector.
