Former member of the House of Representatives, Sam Onuigbo, has said that meaningful climate action can only succeed when leaders demonstrate the political courage needed to implement policies that address environmental challenges and promote sustainable development.
Speaking at a climate-focused event, Onuigbo stressed that governments must move beyond promises and take decisive actions to tackle the growing threats posed by climate change, including flooding, desertification, food insecurity, and environmental degradation.
According to him, climate change is no longer a future concern but a present reality affecting communities, livelihoods, and national economies across the world.
The former lawmaker noted that Nigeria possesses significant potential to attract climate-related investments, particularly in renewable energy, green infrastructure, sustainable agriculture, and environmental conservation.
He argued that investors are increasingly looking for countries with clear policies, strong institutions, and leadership committed to implementing climate-friendly initiatives.
Onuigbo called on policymakers at all levels to create an enabling environment that encourages private sector participation in climate projects while ensuring that communities vulnerable to environmental challenges receive adequate support.
He also emphasized the need for collaboration among government agencies, development partners, civil society organisations, and the private sector to drive climate resilience and sustainable economic growth.
The former representative expressed optimism that with the right leadership and policy direction, Nigeria can position itself as a major destination for climate finance and green investments while contributing meaningfully to global efforts to combat climate change.
He urged leaders to embrace difficult but necessary decisions that would secure a healthier environment and a more sustainable future for generations to come.
