The Anambra State Government has alleged that the administration of former Governor Peter Obi left unpaid balances from eight external loan facilities when he left office on March 17, 2014.

The state government said the outstanding loans, when calculated at the official exchange rate as of June 30, 2026, amounted to about N127.4 billion.

According to the government, the loans were obtained through eight separate external borrowing arrangements during Obi’s tenure, with portions of the facilities still outstanding when his administration ended.

The state government made the disclosure while responding to recent comments associated with Obi, who governed Anambra State between 2006 and 2013 before handing over to Willie Obiano.

It said the figures were based on its records of the outstanding external loan obligations and the applicable exchange rate as of June 30, 2026.

The development has renewed attention on the state’s historical debt obligations and how loans obtained by previous administrations have been managed and repaid over the years. The state government is expected to provide further details on the individual loan facilities, repayment status and current balances.
