The Federal Government plans to transfer outstanding projects under the 2026 budget into the 2027 budget as part of efforts to end the practice of running multiple budgets simultaneously.
The proposed move is aimed at improving budget implementation, strengthening fiscal discipline and ensuring that government projects are properly captured and funded within the appropriate financial year.
Under the arrangement, projects that remain incomplete at the end of 2026 would be carried into the 2027 budget to allow for continued funding and implementation.
The initiative is also expected to make it easier for the government to monitor capital expenditure, track project delivery and improve accountability in the use of public funds.
Nigeria has faced challenges with delayed budget implementation, with some capital projects extending beyond their original timelines and overlapping with subsequent budget cycles.
The Federal Government’s proposed approach seeks to address these concerns by promoting a more coordinated budgeting system and reducing the complications associated with operating multiple budgets at the same time.
However, the success of the plan will depend on effective funding, timely project execution and proper monitoring by the relevant government agencies.
