Super Eagles legend Segun Odegbami has criticised the electoral process of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), calling for a temporary suspension of the forthcoming elections.
Odegbami expressed concern over the manner in which the election is being organised, arguing that some fundamental issues surrounding the administration of Nigerian football need to be addressed before a new leadership is elected.
The former Nigeria international questioned the transparency and credibility of the electoral process, warning that proceeding without resolving the outstanding issues could further deepen the problems affecting football administration in the country.
Odegbami also called for greater scrutiny of the NFF’s electoral framework and the structures governing Nigerian football, insisting that the interests of the country’s football development should take precedence over individual or political interests.
He urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the National Sports Commission and other relevant stakeholders to intervene within the limits of the law and ensure that the process is properly reviewed.
According to the football icon, suspending the election would provide an opportunity for stakeholders to examine the underlying issues and establish a more credible framework for the administration of Nigerian football.
Odegbami maintained that Nigeria possesses enormous football talent and potential but needs an effective, transparent and accountable football administration to fully harness it.
He therefore appealed to Nigerians and football stakeholders to pay attention to the electoral process and support efforts aimed at reforming the system.
The call comes as preparations intensify for the forthcoming NFF elections, which will determine the leadership of Nigerian football for the next administration.
