ALAAFIN TO INSTALL EX-FIRSTBANK GMD ADEDUNTAN AS NEW BALOGUN OF OYO SEPTEMBER 5
The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, will on Saturday, September 5, 2026, install renowned corporate leader and philanthropist, Oloye (Dr) Adesola Kazeem Adeduntan, as the new Balogun of Oyo.
The installation ceremony, originally scheduled for July, was postponed following the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State. The victims have since regained their freedom, although two lives were tragically lost during the incident.
Dr. Adeduntan, a former Group Managing Director of FirstBank, will succeed the late Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo, the former Governor of the old Oyo State, who held the prestigious Balogun title until his death.
The Balogun of Oyo is one of the highest traditional titles in the Oyo Empire, historically associated with military leadership, bravery, statesmanship, and service to the kingdom.
Adeduntan is widely respected for his contributions to Nigeria’s banking industry, corporate governance, and philanthropy. His installation is expected to further strengthen the relationship between traditional institutions and modern leadership.
Traditional rulers, political leaders, captains of industry, and dignitaries from across Nigeria are expected to attend the historic ceremony in Oyo, marking another significant milestone in the reign of the Alaafin.
The palace described the installation as a celebration of leadership, integrity, and service, expressing confidence that the new Balogun will uphold the values and traditions of the Oyo Empire.
