PROBE ₦6.79BN POLICE FUNDS, MISSING FIREARMS, SERAP ASKS TINUBU

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to order an immediate investigation into the alleged diversion of ₦6.79 billion in police funds and the reported disappearance of thousands of firearms, as highlighted in the Auditor-General’s report.
SERAP urged the President to ensure that anyone found responsible for the alleged financial mismanagement or missing weapons is identified, investigated, and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The organisation said the allegations raise serious concerns about accountability, transparency, and public safety, stressing that missing firearms could pose significant security risks if they fall into the wrong hands.
According to SERAP, recovering any misappropriated public funds and tracing the missing weapons should be treated as matters of urgent national importance.
The group also called on the Federal Government to strengthen oversight of public institutions and implement measures to prevent the recurrence of financial irregularities and poor record-keeping within security agencies.
SERAP maintained that transparency and accountability in the management of public resources are essential to rebuilding public trust and improving governance.
The organisation urged the Tinubu administration to act swiftly on the recommendations contained in the Auditor-General’s report, saying decisive action would demonstrate the government’s commitment to fighting corruption and promoting accountability.
