The Federal Government has said Nigeria must address its domestic challenges before it can effectively reclaim its leadership role on the African continent.
Speaking on the country’s foreign policy direction, the Acting Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, said strengthening the nation’s economy, improving security, and promoting good governance are essential to restoring Nigeria’s influence in Africa and beyond.
According to him, a stable and prosperous Nigeria is better positioned to champion regional integration, economic cooperation, peace, and development across the continent.
He stressed that the country’s foreign policy is anchored on the “Nigeria First” principle, which prioritises the welfare, security, and prosperity of Nigerians while advancing the nation’s strategic interests globally.
The minister noted that ongoing reforms aimed at boosting economic resilience, attracting investment, and enhancing national security would ultimately strengthen Nigeria’s voice in regional and international affairs.
He also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to working with African nations to tackle shared challenges, including insecurity, climate change, trade, and sustainable development.
The remarks come as Nigeria seeks to deepen diplomatic ties and reinforce its position as a leading voice in Africa.
