Despite improved availability of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly known as cooking gas, prices have remained high across Nigeria, raising concerns among households and industry stakeholders.
Consumers say the sustained high prices have continued to put pressure on family budgets, forcing many households to reduce consumption or switch to alternative cooking fuels such as firewood and charcoal.
Industry operators attribute the situation to several factors, including foreign exchange fluctuations, transportation and distribution costs, taxes, storage expenses, and other operational challenges affecting the LPG value chain.
They noted that while supply has improved significantly, these additional costs have prevented a corresponding reduction in retail prices.
Stakeholders have called on the Federal Government to introduce policies that will lower production and distribution costs, improve infrastructure, and encourage greater investment in domestic LPG production.
They also urged authorities to address bottlenecks within the supply chain to make clean cooking energy more affordable and accessible to Nigerians.
Analysts warn that unless the underlying cost pressures are addressed, many low-income households may continue to struggle with the rising cost of cooking gas despite increased supply.
