FG declares ASUU strikes permanently over, says NASU deal soon
The Federal Government has declared that the era of strikes in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions is over, assuring students, parents and stakeholders that universities and polytechnics will remain open going forward.
Government officials stated that measures have been put in place to address longstanding issues that have often led to industrial actions by academic and non-academic unions. These include improved engagement with stakeholders, better funding frameworks and ongoing reforms aimed at stabilising the education sector.
The government also disclosed that discussions with the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) are nearing conclusion, expressing optimism that a final agreement will soon be reached to prevent further disruptions.
According to authorities, the commitment is part of a broader effort to ensure uninterrupted academic calendars and restore confidence in Nigeria’s higher education system.
However, stakeholders note that sustained implementation of agreements and consistent dialogue with unions such as the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) will be critical to achieving lasting industrial harmony.
Observers say while the declaration signals strong intent, its success will depend on the government’s ability to address underlying issues and maintain trust with education sector unions.
