The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a four-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to begin the implementation of a newly approved salary structure for university lecturers.

ASUU President, Christopher Piwuna, announced the directive while addressing members at Sa’adu Zungur University, Yuli Campus in Bauchi State, stating that the countdown takes immediate effect. He warned that the union would take decisive action if the government fails to meet its demands within the stipulated period.

According to Piwuna, the delay in implementing the agreed salary adjustments has continued to affect the welfare and morale of academic staff across public universities. He stressed that improved remuneration is essential for maintaining standards in teaching, research and overall academic performance.

The union also reiterated concerns over broader issues in the university system, including funding, infrastructure and working conditions, urging the government to demonstrate commitment to revitalising the education sector.

Observers say the ultimatum raises concerns about a possible industrial action if the demands are not met, which could disrupt academic activities nationwide.

The Federal Government is yet to issue an official response as stakeholders monitor developments closely.
