Fintiri defection gives APC edge over Atiku in Adamawa – Onanuga
A presidential spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, has said that the reported defection of Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, to the All Progressives Congress (APC) has given the ruling party a significant advantage over former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar in the state.
Onanuga said the development marks a major political shift in Adamawa, a state widely considered the political base of Atiku, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He noted that the governor’s move strengthens the APC’s structure and influence ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to him, as a sitting governor with established political networks across the state, Fintiri’s defection consolidates the APC’s presence at the grassroots level and repositions the party strategically in the North-East.
He maintained that the political balance in Adamawa has now tilted in favour of the APC, adding that the development could significantly alter future electoral calculations in the state.
Adamawa has played a prominent role in national politics, particularly due to Atiku’s longstanding influence. Analysts say any major realignment involving key political figures in the state is likely to impact preparations for the next general elections.
As of the time of filing this report, there was no immediate official reaction from Atiku Abubakar or the PDP regarding the claim. Political observers say more clarity is expected in the coming days as stakeholders respond to the unfolding situation.
