2027 polls: APC, 4 parties ready, 16 others in candidates’ crisis
The political landscape ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections is beginning to take shape as only a handful of parties appear fully prepared for the contest, while many others are still battling internal crises over candidates and party structures.
Following the release of the election timetable by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the February 20, 2027 polls, political observers say the announcement has exposed deep divisions within several registered parties. While the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and a few other major parties have intensified early mobilisation, at least 16 political parties are reportedly grappling with leadership disputes, zoning controversies and disagreements over candidate selection.
Party insiders revealed that prolonged court cases, factional rivalries and unresolved primary processes have slowed preparations in many smaller political platforms. Some parties are yet to finalise campaign strategies or establish strong grassroots engagement, raising concerns about their readiness for a nationwide election.
Analysts note that the APC, alongside four relatively stable parties, has begun consolidating alliances and strengthening internal structures ahead of the polls. These parties are said to be focusing on reconciliation among stakeholders, membership expansion and early policy messaging to gain political advantage.
However, internal wrangling continues to threaten the prospects of several opposition groups. Sources within affected parties disclosed that disagreements over who should emerge as candidates for key positions — including presidential, governorship and legislative seats — remain unresolved, leaving supporters uncertain about the future direction of their parties.
Experts warn that unless these political organisations quickly address their internal crises, they risk losing relevance before the official campaign season begins. With INEC’s timetable already in motion, parties face mounting pressure to settle disputes and meet critical electoral deadlines.
As preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum, the coming months are expected to test the unity, organisation and strategic planning of Nigeria’s political parties, factors that may ultimately shape the outcome of the nationwide contest.
