Director-General of the World Trade Organization, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has cautioned Nigerians over a fake AI-manipulated video that has been circulating across social media platforms, warning the public not to fall victim to misinformation.
In a statement shared via her verified account, Okonjo-Iweala clarified that she only posts official messages on her verified X (formerly Twitter) page, stressing that any videos, adverts or statements attributed to her elsewhere should be treated with caution. She noted that the manipulated clip falsely portrays her endorsing claims she never made.
The former Nigerian finance minister urged members of the public to verify information from credible sources before sharing, especially as artificial intelligence tools make it easier for fraudsters to create convincing fake content. She also called on social media users to report suspicious videos and accounts to prevent further spread.
Her warning comes amid growing global concerns over the rise of deepfake technology and the increasing use of AI-generated media to mislead audiences online. Experts say public awareness and digital literacy remain key in tackling the spread of manipulated content.
